Yen falls after G7 pledge to support Japan

TOKYO (AP) -- The yen fell in early Friday trading after the Group of Seven major governments agreed to intervene in currency markets to support Japan's quake recovery.

The G-7 did not say what it would do, but the yen has risen this week, possibly threatening Japan's exports.

Shortly after the G-7 announcement, the yen fell from 79.45 to the dollar to 81.26 in Tokyo.

The Kyodo News agency said Japan's government intervened in currency markets after the G7 statement but there was no immediate official confirmation of that.

Yemen deports 2 American, 2 British journalists

CAIRO (AP) -- Armed Yemeni security forces raided an apartment shared by four Western journalists Monday and deported them because of their coverage of a growing uprising against the country's longtime ruler, one of the reporters said.

The journalists, two Americans and two Britons in their 20s, contribute to publications including the Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post.

"They came into our apartment this morning and they told us all to come to the immigration office," said Oliver Holmes, 24, a Briton. "They sat us down and said, 'You're being deported.'"

2 deputies slain, 2 wounded in small Va. town

VANSANT, Va. (AP) -- A small southwestern Virginia community is again dealing with a deadly shooting rampage that this time killed two deputies and wounded two more before the suspect who may have been trying to rob a salvage yard was fatally shot by police.

Buchanan County deputies investigating at Roger's Service Center in Vansant on Sunday afternoon were met by gunfire from long range, Virginia State Police said. Two were hit and died at the scene. Two others who arrived also were shot, said State Police Sgt. Steve Lowe.

One deputy has life-threatening injuries and the other was in serious condition, state police said. No names were released late Sunday.
